Residential Aged Care
Northeast Health Wangaratta (NHW) has a long history and commitment to providing quality residential aged care services to the local aging community.
Illoura Residential Aged Care replaces the existing 70 bed facility comprising of the PH Dicker and Matthew Rohan Wings located on Clark Street as part of the Northeast Health Wangaratta campus.
The facility was awarded top marks at ACHS accreditation in February 2006. Surveyors who reviewed every aspect of care and management, awarded NHW's service 44 out of a possible 44 outcome standards - a fantastic effort by all staff.
In 2005, NHW were successful in obtaining state government funding for the new facility.
Construction began on the facility with the turning of the first sod by Victorian Aged Care Minister, Gavin Jennings in October 2006.
The new nursing home has been built on the corner of College and Phillipson Streets on land leased from the Diocese of Sandhurst.
The new facility comprises a total of 62 high care beds providing care for people who are frail and/or have dementia.
Illoura has 46 single and eight double rooms, all with ensuite facilities. Communal areas are inclusive of two large dining rooms with kitchens, and two large rooms with activity areas that allow residents to share meal and relaxation times.
Sitting rooms provide private space for residents, their families and friends.
The facility includes an additional two rooms dedicated to respite services whereby temporary care is provided to relieve carers.
Illoura will enable the regions most vulnerable elderly people to receive the best possible care in amodern facility.
All of the rooms are fitted with tracking devices to assist staff with the safe lifting of residents from their beds, wheelchairs etc.
The new facility will give residents more privacy and it has a stronger rural aspect, given its location towards the outskirts of the city amidst the sounds of young people going about their daily school activities.
The design of the new building allows views from all rooms, and maximises the use of natural light.
The rural vista will be especially appreciated by those farmers amongst the residents. There will also be a dementia specific garden for residents’ enjoyment.
There are large water tanks underground which will be used to catch rain water from the roof.
This water will be recycled for use on gardens and to flush the toilets – a great initiative given the current drought conditions that continue to challenge the local community.
Funds raised from the Spring Appeal in 2005 will be used to purchase furnishings and equipment for the new facility.
A public competition was held to decide the name of the new facility.
The title of “Illoura” was chosen.
Illoura maintains a home like environment with the ability for residents to select their own curtains, doona covers, recliner chair, tri-pillows and cushions, pictures for walls, photos trinkets, books and other items of significance, television, and additional toiletries other than the usual items supplied.
Residents moved in to Illoura in December 2007.
