Midwifery Services

NHW has well developed midwifery services which offer several streams of care to families. The services have been designed to provide safe midwifery care and care that is woman focused. Midwifery services are provided in both a shared care model (with local General Practitioners) and in a Midwife care model. In both models, care to the family during pregnancy, birth and following birth is provided by Midwives, Nurses, Doctors and Obstetricians, according to the individual needs of mother and baby.

The models of midwifery care provided at NHW are highly regarded by the families who utilise them and are recognised by the Victorian Department of Human Services as leading the way for the future of midwifery services.

NHW offers a 'state of the art' obstetrics facility which includes 4 birth rooms, 6 private rooms, 2 bed ward accommodation, lounge area and a neonatal nursery. The opening of the new obstetrics ward facility in 2001, cemented our place as one of the premier obstetric units outside Melbourne boasting a level two facility. Being a level two, Wangaratta can handle almost all births from straight forward deliveries to multiple births and pre-mature babies 32 weeks and upwards. A level two also has attached to it Obstetricians and Paediatricians. NHW has a high dependency neonatal nursery equipped to deal with all complications including ventilation and respiratory support.
