Kerferd Unit

Kerferd Unit is the 20 bed psychiatric inpatient service located at Northeast Health Wangaratta providing assessment, diagnosis and treatment of acute mental illness in the Eastern Hume region. Kerferd Unit is a service for adults including the aged and has service links to the regional Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service.

The Kerferd Unit coordinates all out of hours requests for service via a telephone triage service for the whole of the Eastern Hume region.

Kerferd Unit provides 24 hour inpatient assessment, treatment and support for individuals aged 18 and over, in the acute stage of mental illness. The unit caters for individuals residing in the Eastern sector of the Hume Region. Referral for admission is usually via Community Mental Health Services in either Wangaratta or Wodonga but can also be via General Practitioners and other health service providers.

This purpose built unit contains 20 beds, including provision for high level supervision, and is able to accept clients for both involuntary and informal admission. Accommodation is in single rooms with ensuite and shared facilities.

Staff on the unit work in close collaboration with Community Case Managers, Consumer and Carer Consultants, other health service providers and Emergency Service personnel, and liaise with community agencies to maintain consumer links with their community based supports.

Staff

The Consumer Consultants' role is to work with clients and obtain and represent their views and experiences so as to improve service quality and responsiveness.

The Carer Consultant provides support information and referral to the carers of people with a mental illness.
