Diabetes Education
This service is available to both inpatients and outpatients of NHW. Anyone with diabetes may make an appointment to attend the service. You may be referred by your doctor or other health care provider. Diabetes Educators are a part of a team that work with you, your doctor, dietitian, podiatrist, social worker etc. to help you manage your diabetes in the best possible way.
The Diabetes Education service provides:
- Specialised individual counselling for people with Type 1, Type 2 and Gestational Diabetes
- Blood glucose monitoring advice and equipment
- Education regarding treatment for diabetes eg. insulin administration
- Group education programs
- Information and education to community and service organisations
New Life with Diabetes Group
Provides education for people with Type 2 diabetes to best manage their condition. The four week program includes the following topics:
- What is diabetes?
- Management of diabetes
- Exercise
- Nutrition
- Foot care
- The impact of your new life with diabetes
- Preventing diabetes related complications
Each class has a supervised weight training component. A supermarket tour with a trained Dietitian is also on offer.
Dose Adjustment for Normal Eating (DAFNE)
This is a group specifically for people with Type 1 diabetes. It is a way of managing your diabetes by working our how much insulin you need for what you want to eat.
DAFNE involves attending a five day training course (9am to 5pm Monday to Friday). The structured teaching program covers topics including carbohydrate estimation, insulin regimes illness and exercise.
