Community Midwife Program

The Community Midwife Program (CMP) is the preeminent model of midwife led care. Established in 1996, the model provides care for up to 120 women per year and focuses on meeting individual needs of women across the continuum of care. The program meets the needs of the community by practicing with no exclusion criteria, making this a birthing choice available for all women. The midwives work collaboratively with allied health services using the referral process as required. Further services available to women include individual and group education sessions, young women's pregnancy and support group and Lactation Clinic. Comprehensive postnatal followup is a key attribute of this program.
The model of care provided by CMP has been widely acknowledged by midwifery service providers and is seen as the benchmark model. Current Government policy identifies midwife models of care as the future direction in the provision of quality midwifery services in rural regions.
