Training and Development
NHW provides an extensive professional development program and is committed to the local professional development of all staff. The training programs provided or supported by NHW are of high calibre. NHW produces excellent training programs through the assistance of many committed staff members who guide and share years of knowledge with students, graduates and other staff members.
Mandatory education sessions that all staff are required to attend are:
- Manual Handling
- Fire/Evacuation and Emergency Response
- Infection Control
In addition, Clinical staff are required to attend sessions in:
- CPR
- No Lift
Education and competency assessment is also offered for Advanced Life Support and a range of other sessions based on staff and organisational identified needs.
Orientation Program
All new staff, on commencement of employment, are provided with orientation. A paid orientation day is offered monthly and subjects covered include; organisation overview and welcome, quality and safety, fire and evacuation procedure, privacy and confidentiality, waste management, manual handling, Occupationsl Health & Safety, human resources, NHW social club and a campus tour.
Comprehensive In-service Program
NHW offers comprehensive in-service education to all staff members. A wide variety of in-service topics are offered, ranging from specialised clinical problems, the safe use of equipment and quality issues, to information about services provided by the health service.
No Lift Training
All clinical staff involved in the handling or transfer of patients are required to attend a practical training session in minimal handling techniques. NHW has introduced a no lifting, minimal handling policy and the program continues to expand throughout the service. Staff attend an initial training session and then a refresher annually. The overall program is coordinated by the No Lift Coordinator.
Basic and Advanced Life Support
Basic Life Support or CPR is mandatory for all staff who have patient contact. These staff are expected to complete a yearly update, which is offered regularly throughout the health service. NHW has a comprehensive program to teach nursing staff Advanced Life Support (ALS) and, following an exam, staff may be credentialed in ALS.
Competency Packages
Competency packages such as Intravenous Cannulation and Epidural Management are offered to nursing staff, with training and support provided. Once competency is achieved a certificate is awarded.
Student Nurses
Student nurses from Bachelor of Nursing degree courses and Certificate 4 TAFE courses are provided with clinical experience and support at NHW.
Medical Training
Medical registrars, medical students and medical residents gain valuable rural experience at NHW.
