Rural Clinical School

NHW is now working in conjunction with Melbourne University to provide a rural campus for a Rural Clinical School. This development will allow University of Melbourne medical students to spend between 18 and 30 months working in rural hospital settings. It will show students first hand the professional and lifestyle opportunities available in rural areas, with the hope that they many enter rural practice once graduated.

July 2004 saw the commencement of the first group of eight students based in Wangaratta for a whole semester. This was their very first clinical attachment, covering mainly the areas of Gastroenterology, General Surgery, Cardiorespiratory Medicine, Orthopaedics, and Anaesthetics. Dr Ruth Drohan, Clinical Sub-Dean, manages the Wangaratta Campus of the Rural Clinical School.

Newly refurbished facilities in the Chalet at NHW were officially opened in February 2006. The new premises include a computer lab, video conferencing room, tutorial rooms with state-of-the-art audio-visual technology and the latest clinical skills equipment.

A refurbished student accommodation facility is available in Worland Road, Wangaratta.
