Aims of the program
The principal aim of any GNP is to support the new graduate during the period of adjustment in which the graduate develops the skills, knowledge and values (additional to those learnt during undergraduate study) required to become effective member of the nursing workforce (Queensland Nursing Council, 2001, Reid, 1994). The ultimate goal is for the graduate nurse to become competent, confident, accountable and professional. (Nurse Policy Branch 2003)
Specific aims of the NHW Program:
- Promote self-help seeking behaviours
- Enhance knowledge, confidence and dexterity in the clinical environment
- Promote autonomous practice
- Develop resilience
- Encourage reflective practice
- Encourage professional debate
- Assist in the adoption of evidence based practice
We endeavour to assist you in the achievement of these aims through an innovative program that is responsive to the needs of newly graduated nurses.
Features of the program include:
- Input into choice of rotation with every effort made to provide high priority choice rotation for each participant
- Opportunities for part-time or full-time employment
- Hospital orientation program
- Comprehensive Nursing orientation
- Rotations through 3 or 4 acute and / or sub-acute / community programs
- Individual unit orientation for each rotation
- Graduate Nurse study day program
- Relief from patient care responsibilities to complete mandatory learning packages
- Designated program coordination
- Ongoing commitment to clinical facilitation throughout the year from a team of experienced support staff
- The opportunity to influence nursing practice through participation in an Evidence Gap Project
- Participation in the hospital SMART initiative
- Opportunities for ongoing employment
Positions are offered either part time (4 days a week) or full time with all award and hospital entitlements:
- Six weeks annual leave (5 weeks if part time)
- ADO each month for full time staff
- Additional paid study leave according to EBA entitlements

- Acute Medical / Medical Assessment & Planning Unit
- Acute surgical
- Aub-Acute / Inpatient Rehabilitation Services
- Day Stay Procedure Unit

- Critical Care Unit
- Home Based Nursing
- High Level Aged Care
