
Wangaratta is located in the North East of Victoria, 235 kilometers North East of Melbourne and 647 kilometers South of Sydney on the Hume Freeway. Wangaratta is the municipality's largest urban centre and has approximately 18,000 residents with around 26,000 within the Rural City of Wangaratta, which also includes parts of Beechworth, Benalla and Yarrawonga.
The region is renowned for world class wineries, gourmet food, spectacular scenery, snow plains, cultural heritage and access to numerous State and National Parks. Two extensive river systems the Ovens and King Rivers provide fertility of and abundant produce through the valleys and come together at Wangaratta.
Nestled within the Warby and Pilot Ranges and the Ovens and King Valleys, the Rural City of Wangaratta has a comfortable climate with four distinct seasons, and a varied and picturesque landscape. It is a predominantly winter rainfall with an average of 636mm and 98 rain days per annum. Its terrain, geology and climate not only make it an attractive place to live but also support a diversity of agricultural activities ranging from broad acre cropping and pastoral farming to horticulture and viticultural activities.
Families are will serviced by 21 primary schools, three secondary schools, one specialist school, one TAFE Institute, a Centre for Adult Education and many childcare and kindergarten facilities.
The area attracts a high throughput of tourists due to the spectacular scenery, bushwalking, cycling, wine and gourmet food festivals, and the popular Jazz Festival each November.
